When humans first invented tools, one of the first tools they invented was the hammer, and we've been smashing our thumbs with it ever since. It doesn't have to be that way.

First you need to hold the hammer correctly. Imagine you're shaking hands with it. Make sure you grab the hammer low on the meaty part. If you grab too high, you're going to have problems. If you choke up too high, you lose leverage and control.
